Refresh your home with accessories for Spring

August 26, 2013

Tired of nesting at home throughout the Winter months staring at the same four walls? Why not brighten up your home ready for Spring just by changing or adding a few new accessories.

Trends in home décor quickly come and go, so it’s all about finding and matching the perfect pieces to complement your space and your personality. There is no “one size fits all” in home decorating especially for those hard-to-decorate rooms and spaces. From finding the right wall colour to selecting the best flooring, furniture and accessories, homeowners are often at a loss.

So, where do you start?

Pick a room in your house to transform and spend a few afternoons enjoying the Winter sun by flicking through a few homely magazines for inspiration. By doing this you can identify a style that suits your way of living and that will tell a story about you. You will be surprised how simple accessories can really change the look of a room and make it a more inviting space.

Here are a few tips:

Soft furnishings- Refresh with new decorative pillows

Add a new touch of colour to your living space. If your sofa is looking drab and dreary mix it up with a few bright coloured accent cushions and throws. Think outside the box, and consider using the bold prints for feature pieces like chairs or ottomans.

Try changing the bath towels and floor mats, new rugs and pictures in your living space, ornaments that add a slight hue of colour to the room or a new bedspread for your master bedroom.

Vases and flowers

Another easy way to brighten a space is to accessorise with flowers. Vases can really add to a room and a bold vase really makes a difference as a focal point. Florists can help design a custom arrangement that complements the vase and incorporates style and quality into any room in the house but you can also feel confident that flowers from your local supermarket or garden also work beautifully in brightening a room.

Nothing gives a space a more dramatic update than a fresh coat of paint. For low cost and a bit of elbow grease, this update is the best value for delivering a huge transformation. Try sample pots and colour swatches for the best match before committing to the whole room. Don’t forget the wallpaper or wall tiles for that standout feature space.

The kitchen

Instead of a daunting and expensive full kitchen remodel, update appliances, such as the kettle, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave etc. or consider de-cluttering by hiding everything in cupboards. If you’re more ambitious, repainting kitchen cabinets and/or replacing outdated appliances.

No budget! Rearrange existing furniture

Something as simple as swapping out knick-knacks, pictures, and other small accessories, can make a big impact on the look and feel of a room. If you can’t afford to buy new, simply relocate what you already have to a new area of the home. For example, you could bring the mirror from the entrance to the bedroom and place it above the dresser. Change up the family portraits in the living room for ones in the study. Bring in the unused metal table from the front garden and give it a good clean; it may be the perfect solution to fit for an empty space in the family room or back patio! Use your imagination, and you’ll find an abundance of new ways to repurpose what you already have to refresh your home for Spring.
